Sustainable Development Goals 2030

On 25 September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in New York adopted the Post-2015 Development Agenda – Transforming Our World: an Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.

This document was supported by all 193 UN Member States, including Bulgaria. It sets 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), comprising a total of 169 sub-goals. They cover issues such as the eradication of poverty, hunger and disease, environmental protection, economic development, democratic institutions, human rights and gender equality.

The European Union (EU) has introduced around 100 indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are in line with the UN global indicators but adapted to the specific needs of the EU. This allows the EU to focus on the areas of greatest importance to the Union. The European Commission monitors progress along these lines and publishes annual monitoring reports on the SDGs.

Since the beginning of 2020, the SDGs have been integrated as new elements in the European Semester – the framework for economic policy coordination in the EU. They are also important for Bulgaria’s National Development Programme 2030, which sets the overall objectives of development policies in all sectors of government. These objectives contribute to the achievement of the strategic national objectives of the National Agenda, including accelerated economic development, demographic upswing and reduction of inequalities.
